The UK x JP conference 2019 is going to be held between 19th-25th August.
UK x JP 2019 – ”Legacy of War: Our Memories of Hiroshima”
Human history is the history of war. War has evolved with the development of science and technology. With the advent of tanks, aircrafts and nuclear weapons in the First and Second World Wars, the concept of threat has completely changed.
Nine countries in the world possess a total of 14,575 nuclear weapons, including the United Kingdom with 215 of them under the Trident system. Since its peak in the mid-1980s, global nuclear arsenals have decreased by two-thirds. With today’s technology, one nuclear weapon can destroy a whole city, potentially killing millions, and jeopardising the natural environment and lives of future generations through its long-term catastrophic effects.
In 2017, the UN General Assembly passed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Although the majority of member states have supported this treaty, and presently 70 countries in the world have signed the treaty, most of the NATO member states, all nuclear powers and Japan have voted against the proposal at the UN General Assembly.
Japan is the only country in the world where nuclear weapons have been deployed and we still see the effects today in the city of Hiroshima. This is a legacy that affects all of Japan and Japanese people. The horrific legacy will never be forgotten in Japan.
The world has reached the centennial of the end of the World War 1 in 2018. Therefore, along with the end of Heisei period (the era without war) and the aging generation of hibakusha (survivors of Hiroshima nuclear attack), at the UK-JP 2019 conference we will discuss war and peace.
At this conference, we invite hibakusha and professors of peace studies, and together will look at activities for the abolition of nuclear weapons and for world peace based on the destruction at Hiroshima. By analysing historical and cultural backgrounds, domestic issues and circumstances, a discussion will be held on how these two nations will address the future of security politics.

What it will involve
Below are the 8 elements we consider to be the core experience of the conference.
We will divide participants into presentation groups of ~5 to research on a topic related to their country.
We will have specialists as guest speakers as a way of input that would spark thoughts and discussion.
We will discuss thoughts mentioned in the lectures, and share thoughts on its potential / improvements.
Meet people / social sectors trying to improve the situation. Hear their experiences first-hand.
We will uncover alternate approaches towards the conference’s theme, and develop presentation skills.
Share thoughts on the presentations, and deepen understanding of topics researched by other groups.
This is a unique opportunity where students living in Japan can share their own culture and experiences.
We summarise our discussion in a report in order to publish our activities and to better future conferences.
